NDIS Participants Must Update myGov Sign-In Options by 18 October 2024

The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) has announced a significant update for all NDIS participants, nominees, and child representatives. As of 18 October 2024, the option to sign in to myGov accounts using secret questions and answers will be permanently removed. To maintain access to the NDIS portal and app, all users who rely on this method must update their myGov sign-in options before this deadline.

This change is crucial to ensure stronger security and protect participants’ personal information and funds. The secret question and answer option has been deemed vulnerable due to the ease with which answers can sometimes be discovered online. As a result, the NDIA is urging all NDIS participants to switch to more secure authentication methods offered by myGov.

Why This Change Matters

According to the NDIA, this update will bring all myGov users in line with modern digital security practices. While secret questions and answers were once considered a useful backup method for signing in, they are now outdated and increasingly risky. The NDIA explains that this method leaves participants’ accounts exposed to unauthorized access, putting their NDIS funds at risk.

To mitigate these risks, the NDIA is encouraging users to upgrade to stronger, more secure sign-in methods that include two-factor authentication (2FA) options such as:

  • Receiving a code by SMS
  • Using a passkey
  • Digital ID
  • myGov Code Generator app

These methods provide enhanced security and offer a more reliable safeguard for accessing sensitive information, including NDIS participant funds. The NDIA has assured users that the transition is straightforward and provides several options for those who may need assistance.
