As the NDIS provider transition period approaches its end, providers and businesses that deliver supports and services to NDIS participants must take note of the important changes coming into effect. These changes, which started on 3 October 2024, require all NDIS participants and providers to adhere to new rules about how NDIS funding can be spent. With the 30-day transition period ending on Friday 1 November 2024, it’s essential that providers understand these changes.
The 30-day provider transition period was introduced to give providers time to adjust to the updated legislative requirements. Starting from 3 October 2024, NDIS providers have had a month to align their services and processes with the new rules. The transition period ends on 1 November 2024 (inclusive), marking the deadline for providers to fully comply with the changes.
The most critical change that providers need to be aware of is the stricter guidelines regarding what NDIS funding can be used for. From 3 October 2024, NDIS participants and their authorized representatives can:
These approved and non-approved lists of NDIS supports are available on the NDIS website under the “What Does NDIS Fund?” page. This change provides clearer guidance on how NDIS funding should be spent, ensuring that all claims align with the scheme’s intended purpose.
For NDIS providers and plan managers, the changes mean that only items on the approved NDIS supports list can be claimed using NDIS funding. From 2 November 2024, once the transition period ends, providers must fully adhere to these guidelines, or risk facing consequences.
There is an additional process for replacement supports, where participants may request to replace an NDIS support with a non-NDIS support in certain specific circumstances. The replacement support must be from the official replacement supports list, which is also available on the NDIS website.
To get a replacement support approved, participants must demonstrate that the new support will provide the same or better outcomes, and be the same or better value for money, compared to the existing NDIS support. Importantly, participants must follow this process before purchasing the replacement support. Providers should not offer or provide replacement supports without official evidence that the replacement has been approved.
To assist providers with understanding these changes, the NDIS has made several resources available:
Providers are encouraged to familiarize themselves with these resources to support their conversations with participants and their families.
